Basketball with Maggie Davis
By Jazarah Nance
To play basketball, you need to have energy, endurance, and excitement. Maggie Davis has all of those qualities. She also has the passion needed for playing basketball.
Maggie Davis is a 7th grader at Glacial Drumlin Middle School. She plays for the Wisconsin Academy and Monona Grove. She has won 30 medals traveling around the state competing against other teams.
Maggie has been active in basketball since the age of four. She joined because her friends were doing it and it looked interesting. “After the first day of trying it I fell in love with the sport,” Maggie says. “I play way more now than ever,” she continues. Maggie plays basketball everyday and sometimes practices with her little brother, Connor. Maggie loves playing basketball with her friends and team. “I am really close to my team, we’re like a family,” Maggie states.
Spring training with friends

A fun experience that helps you with your passing, setting, serving, and spiking. It is a great way to get exercise. This is such an amazing experience. It is also useful, you can use it for practice or games. My friends and I always have fun at practice and we try our best so we can get better at volleyball.
7th grade student Amanda Revolinski states,”I signed up for spring volleyball because it's a good way to interact with people/friends and it is good exercise.” ”Serving is my favorite skill because it gives me a challenge, which I enjoy,” Amanda said. Spring Volleyball was a popular event for 6th and 7th graders, we worked on many drills and skills. Amanda claimed,”Conditioning is my favorite drill because it helped me learn what I was doing correct and incorrect, it was also a fun drill.” “Many people learned new skills.” Amanda stated, “I learned how to have the correct form for when I do a skill.”
GDS 7th and 8th grade volleyball starts the first day of the new school year. “I am thinking about signing up for next year's season because I think it will be a good experience to try out,”claimed Amanda. Signing up for spring volleyball was a good idea because it will help you for next season,” stated Amanda. “I signed up because some of my friends were doing it and I enjoy playing volleyball,” claimed Amanda.
Running For Fun

400 students all waiting for the horn to go off and Mr. Z’s voice to say the word “GO!” Feet are thumping, hearts are racing, bodies are bouncing up and down filling with excitement. Waiting to have a fun, calming time with your friends. Just say the word Mr. Z! “Get ready… Get set…. GO!” Mr. Z spoke into the microphone. And we’re off..
Earlier I spoke to a runner of the annual GDS Fun Run, Emma Goke. Emma believes that the Fun Run is a great way to stay in shape and is a good incentive for the students. “I decided to actually run this year instead of walk because I run every year and I like to see how I have improved over the years,” Emma explained to me. This year during the Fun Run they had more water stations and changed the route up a little bit. Emma ran the Fun Run with her good friend Maggie Davis. “I think that instead of getting ice cream during lunch we should get it right after the race so the runners could cool down, like the past years,” Emma stated. This year the starting line was where the buses usually line up, and the finish line was the same as the starting line.
The Fun Run was very successful. When speaking to Emma she explained that the Fun Run’s in the past have been better than the Fun Run this year. This year the GDS annual Fun Run shirts were bright green and had purple lettering. The shirts were good because you could see them from far away since they were so bright. Emma’s final statement included, “I feel like the Fun Run was really fun and I had a great time with friends.

Run, Shoot, Play!

Sports, whether you play with a team or by yourself, they are great for children with a variety of benefits. There are so many sport choices, kids can pick any to express their personality. Kids get so many benefits other than physical activity like social skills, self esteem, academic success, and lifelong health.
Playing sports not only helps physical activity but life long health. Children often spend way too much time looking at screens while they could be playing at practice or games. Children who participate in sports tend to be more aware of healthy food choices. “The percentage of overweight children in the United states is growing at an alarming rate, with one out of every three kids now considered overweight or obese.” stated kidshealth.org. If you play sports when you're younger there is more of a chance you will play the same sports when you are older too.
It is no surprise that playing sports help you in academics. Playing sports teaches you life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability, and lastly teamwork, all things needed to succeed in school. Studies have shown, that exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps the body build more connections between nerves creating a better concentration, memory, and creativity. They also can apply the same dedication and hard work learned from sports into their studies.
Although, there are people who believe kids shouldn’t play sports because the risk at getting injured. Abcnews.go.com qouted “But for too many of those kids, that take the fast tract leads staight to injuries, sometime serios ones.” But, studies have shown that only 11% of kids and teens get hurt playing a sport. Even though injuries can be bad, that is not a reason to not play sports.
My last piece of evidence is that sports help boost self esteem and social skills. Kids learn to interact not only with other kids but with coaches, referees, and other parents. Kids also learn so many skills like leadership, team building, and communication skills which not only helps them in school, but future careers and relationships. Children are able to get self confidence from sport praises and encouragement from coaches and parents. Doing sports they learn to trust their abilities, push themselves, and use criticism for their benefits.
To conclude, numerous studies show that there are many benefits and life skills children gain by taking part in sports. Benefits can range from higher grades and a desire to succeed in school to the ability to develop strong, supportive relationships with others. So, go sign up for a sport or sign your kid up as soon as possible!
Girls in Boys Sports
By: Elizabeth Stammen
The gender you are given at birth shouldn’t affect how people treat you in the sports world. Although as of today this does very much affect the would and it shouldn’t. Fortunately, we may be able to solve this issue, with your help. Girls can be just as good at sports as guys so why should they have to have their own teams with something in the team name telling the public that this team is a girls team. If girls and boys teams were combined they would most likely become better athletes.
All girl athletes should be allowed to stand beside a man in a sport and be told that they were just as good as him. Everyone has rights and they are all supposed to be equal, so how come they aren’t in sports? Some have said they think if they play with the boys they will get hurt, but in reality girls already get hurt playing with just girls. There was a study conducted at a military camp that showed women were more frequently injured but infact they were tougher than the men. Thus proving that girls aren’t afraid to play with the boys even if it means getting knocked down sometimes because they know you have to work hard to get better.
The big decision about who's on what team should definitely not be gender. When girls are trying out for a girls team they only get cut if they don’t have the right skill sets. You would think that should be the same for trying out for a boys team, but unfortunately it's not. They bring the gender into play when trying out for a boys team since they think girls can’t play as well as them. Whereas in reality if all genders had the same training they would be the same skill level. Women like Susan B. Anthony have fought for years to try and get equal rights for women. Some say we have these already, but if we truly did you would think girls would be playing with the guys.
You may be thinking well, most girls wouldn’t even want to play on boys sports teams, because they have their own already. But this is not true in many cases, the desire might not be playing with the boy, but rather receiving the equality and getting the same training as them so they can do truly be doing their best. Its also true that many girls would like to play sports that boys do like Baseball as Mo’ne Davis does.
Besides even any fun aspects of the girls playing on the guys teams there are so many benefits to it too. Both genders would learn great lessons from it. For instance girls would learn and get a chance to be more competitive, and boys would learn how to cooperate better. Even further, girls who train and play with boys often learn lots. A college athlete by the name of Gen King stated “Playing 7 years with boys’ sharpened my skills”. And if she didn't get this chance she most likely wouldn’t be at college level, as which is probably true for many other girl athletes.
If girls are allowed on boys sports teams the world will be another step closer toward gender equality. And the boys and girls will both learn much valuable lessons. With your help we can make this happen, try talking to the coaches at your school about tryouts and prove to them that you can play with the boys. This all will help toward getting gender equality in sports.

Tons of Dribbles
By: Lakyn Hinson
The minute the kids show up for practice the coach has to be prepared and ready for anything. To prepare for an actual game, the team should always do drills for shooting and ball handling or defense and offensive. The team always works on skill work in practice to make sure we are the very best we can be during our games. Coaches have to be great at encouraging us whether we are losing or winning during a game. Lastly, basketball and working with kids has to be something coaches are great at.
Ron Hinson, my coach, is phenomenal at coaching basketball for Monona Grove and Wisconsin Hoop Select teams. He started coaching in 2009 and the first team he ever coached was the Monona Grove 2016 class of girls. Being a coach is a lot of work and also a of lot time goes into it. ¨Coaching has affected me greatly from the obvious time commitment that it has required to the interaction with many different people both players and their parents.¨ As a coach, you just have to enjoy and love basketball. ¨I like coaching the game very much because it's a challenge to me in teaching kids how to play the game and also spending time with my daughters. I love seeing the kids enjoy and compete whether it be a league game or a championship game.”
Committing to a team is very important to both the parents and the players. You always have to have a practice plan to make sure you get everything done and your players are ready. ¨I like to plan out my practices to the minute. I create a practice plan for practice that always include lots of skill based activities like dribbling and shooting. The last part of each practice is usually reserved for actual playing of basketball,¨ says Ron Hinson. Also you have to know how to play basketball either by personal experience or from other people. ¨I learned a lot of my coaching from talking with other coaches as well as different books and videos. I also like to attend other coaches practices and observe what they do.” So go catch a basketball game and watch the coaches too!

The Stanley Cup
By: Dylan Genschaw
Finally after 10 long years your team has won the Stanley Cup. Your team is going crazy as your opponents are disappointed and sad. If it is in your town the stadium is loud as can be if not sadness is scattered across the building. Your team shows their sportsmanship by going through and shaking hands with your opponents. Your team’s name and the date the victory was is engraved on the Cup. Then in the end going into the off season is filled with happiness.
Winning the Stanley Cup is a once in a lifetime event and may only get to enjoy once. It is an accomplishment you work all year long for and every hockey player doesn’t get to experience. No matter if you have been playing in the NHL for 5 years or 25 years it doesn’t just come to you, you have to work very hard for it. But when or if you ever win it you should feel very proud of yourself.
Losing the Stanley Cup is something hard. I don’t mean hard to lose or easy to win it but hard afterwards just knowing that you got so far and you didn’t get the final prize, The Stanley Cup. After you lose the final game if you do if you and your team ever go that far again you have experience with it and you know what to do and what not to do.
"The intensity of The Stanley Cup is really fun. Just the feeling when your team is playing and if your team loses the series they're done and that’s the last time they play for the rest of the year. You’re always on the edge of your seat during overtime and sometimes the whole game. Very exciting time of year and fun to hang out with friends and watch the games." explained Luke Hohensee
In the end The Stanley Cup is always a very fun event to watch and for NHL players very fun to play in and also very exciting for players and fans. For every hockey player no matter how many tears, injuries, smiles, or disappointment The Stanley Cup is still the funnest and most exciting event in hockey.

The Fastest 13 Seconds of the Day
By Daniel Robbins
The runners line up at the starting line, their adrenaline levels high. They anxiously await the blast of the gun, and then they’re off to the finish. There’s a lot of competitive energy at a track meet, and the crowds of athletes and parents are huge. The 100 meter dash is the quickest event at a track meet, but for some, like short distance star Quentin Simmons, it’s the best. I recently had a chance to sit down with Quentin and ask him a few questions.
“My favorite event is the 100 meter dash because I like the competitiveness and the individual aspect”, Quentin stated. Simmons has placed third overall in the 100 meter at both track meets so far this season, with a top score of 13.38 seconds. At the Sun Prairie meet, he placed higher than any other Glacial Drumlin seventh grader. He has qualified for the 100 meter dash at the Monona Grove invite, a meet which features the top athletes from different schools in each event, but that’s not the only event he participates in.
“I also like the relay events, especially the four by 100 meter run”, Quentin told me. “Typically, I’m the anchor of our team, the one who runs the last 100 meters, in case we need to do some catch up work.” But catching up hasn’t been a problem for Quentin’s team so far. At the Sauk Prairie meet, his team placed first overall. Simmons qualified for this relay at the MG invitational as well, which was held on Friday, May 6th at Monona Grove High School. Quentin is hoping to continue his success while competing against the best athletes from the area.

Hunting for a Reason
By: Hayden VanLanen
When I wake very early, I eat a simple breakfast as fast as I can. I then put on my coat for the cold, fall day. I walk out to my tiny, cramped stand and get my gun loaded. I then start shaking from the adrenaline as the animal comes closer. When I shoot, my ears are ringing and I feel the punch of the gun. Then I run as fast as I can to see if I got the animal. After that, I take a picture with a huge smile on my face with the animal.
Hunting is a pastime that can be done in almost every season and is a lot a fun. I interviewed my dad to get even closer look on why he likes hunting. Waiting for the animal to come in takes a lot of patience, “I get adrenaline shakes and feel very excited.” People hunt for a variety of reasons. Some do it for food, some do it for the adrenaline rush. My dad does it for the memories, “The memories made and being able to remember back to when I was eight,” said my dad.
Some people like or dislike hunting for many reasons. My dad likes it because the time he gets to spend with his family. “Challenged tradition,” and wildlife management is another reason my dad does it. Lots of people do bad things in hunting that make other hunters mad. According to my dad “People who poach or don't follow the rules.” He also doesn’t like unsafe or unethical hunters. Lastly, some people like to hunt with people that are good at it. “People who do it for the right reason,” stated my dad. He also likes hunting with family members like his wife, me, cousins, his dad, and his uncles.
