School hours
Eddie Sanchez
GDS school starts at 7:45 and ends at 3:05. I think that for a decent school day and not sleeping in class school should start later then 7:45. Middle schoolers and high schoolers are not getting the reccomended amount of sleep of 8 or 9 hours but most kids are only getting 7 hours of sleep. The kids in Monona have to wake up even earlier because of the commute so the kids in Monona get even less sleep. Also another reason is if adolecents dont get enough sleep they will not be able to function correctly in classes. But the reason this has not been put to action is because parents are worried about their kids soccer practice or their kids walkng to school in the dark and getting hit by a car. But this is something that needs to happen for the health of the kids this isnt a choice its a requirement. In conclusion kids all around the world arent being able to get the right amount of sleep and that is resulting in not being able to function right in class and sleeping in class and that would result in not getting enough education.
Should school lockers be bigger?
By: Noah Walker
School lockers around the nation are too small. The first reason why they are too small is because students say it is ‘cramping their lifestyle’. According to the Washington Post, an average school locker is 1 foot wide, and 6 feet high. In addition, there is also not a lot of space between lockers at schools. That results in students having to push their way through other people to get to their locker. A recently conducted survey has proven this. About 85% of the students that were taking part in the survey also said they had to push someone to get to their locker. William Schmidt, a professor at Michigan State University thinks there is nothing wrong with the locker size, it is the 700 hundred page textbooks that some students have to put in their locker that take up so much space. What I have to say in response to this is that most of the big textbooks are usually not taken unless necessary. Usually students do not have to bring those size textbooks home. A final reason why locker sizes are too small is because a recent survey done by Consumer Reports proves that an average 6th grade student carries about 18 pounds worth of school supplies because they said they could not fit it in their lockers. These are all reasons why I and other people think that locker sizes around this nation are just too small.

Rainforests Should Still Stand
By: Natalie Condon
“Every hour 6000 acres of rainforests are disappearing, that’s 4000 football fields!” According to caltech.edu. Rainforests should not be cut down because, we are destroying animals and plants.
“Large areas of rainforests are being destroyed, just for a few logs.” Quoted by rainforestconcern.org. As a result, many animals are becoming endangered and extincit. Another fact is, cutting down trees also speeds up global warming. Which means the arctic, might not exist anymore.
If we keep destroying the rainforests, valuable plants will be destroyed. Some plants might be able to to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS. One plant that can be used to sure diseases is the Aloe plant. The aloe plant can help soothe burns and can help repel biting insects. This plant thrives in the African tropics, and if we didn’t have the African tropics, we wouldn’t have this plant. Said by news.bbc.co and infoplease.com.
While cutting down the rainforests may give people jobs, they are destroying many lives that can’t be replaced.
Another reason to save the rainforest is, the rainforests give us oxygen. Oxygen is essential for human life, and with less rainforest and more people, we wil have a larger issue. Stated by hadonfield.kiz.nj.us.
A few solutions to save the rainforests are to say “no” deforestation, fundraise, and create a habitat for migrating animals. Found in an article from rainforestfoundation.org. Don’t wait long to do this, or we might not have any rainforest left!

Stepping onto the big, black stage. It’s a wave of emotions. First you’re nervous, thinking you’re going to screw up. Then it’s excitement, you can’t see your parents but you know they’re there smiling. Finally you’re at ease. You have the steps down and you’re going to kill this dance. The music starts and you’re flying across the stage like you own it. You see your other classmates with their curls bouncing in their faces. Their over-the-top makeup makes your smile even bigger. Then, at last, it’s over and the music stops. The lights go down and you silently walk off.
Tracy Hines began formal dance training at the age of five by taking ballet lessons, however she was always dancing around her house as a kid. She choreographed her first dance when she was in fifth grade. She doesn’t remember the exact steps for it, but she does remember that it was a cheerleading dance. She was on the cheerleading squad at her elementary school in Deerfield, Wisconsin. Tracy created and taught dances to the other girls who wanted to be on the team.
Tracy’s favorite type of dance to choreograph is tap and for any musical theatre production number that end in elaborate jumps, lifts, and formations. She says, “That’s my background in cheer and gymnastics showing itself!” Tracy gets inspiration from everything around her, such as things like old movies, classic musical theatre, and almost everyone she’s danced or performed with. She often listens to her own instincts when choreographing numbers. Tracy says, “Sometimes the moves just flow out of me!” She is the secretary of the dance group Ready Set Dance of Virginia Davis Dance in Madison, WI. That is where I go to dance, along with Tracy´s daughter, Rori Hines. Tracy continues to choreograph and participate in many plays and musical theatre productions.
Equality in Products

Almost Everywhere you look, you see products for him and her. What many people don’t know is that those gendered products cost more than the non-gendered products and they’re just a gimmick to make businesses more money.
Not only are gendered products expensive, but some products even cost more for a specific gender. Products for women are about 37% more expensive than products for men. A man’s Schick razor costs $8.56, but a woman's costs $9.97. That’s is a $1.41 difference in prices.
In January of 2016 a UK news website called the “Interview” touched on gendered products and how they are visible in today’s society all over the world in the article, “Women Paying More than Men for Everyday Products Thanks to ‘Unacceptable’ Gendered Price Gap”. The author, Lizzie Dearden continued her point on gendered products by saying,” The controversy follows criticism of the UK’s so-called “tampon tax”, where VAT is charged for women’s sanitary products because they are classified as “non-essential luxury items”.” Some people actually think that products such as feminine hygiene products are a luxury item and not a necessity item the same idea is portrayed in the selling in razors. In some jobs, such as UPS, make men shave facial hair, so razors for men are a necessity. Women are not forced to shave, so razors are seen as a luxury and therefore more expensive. This is also apparent in men’s skin product because men in society are viewed as strong and rugged and not in any need of moisturizers. In reality everyone no matter what gender needs these products.
Gendered products have always been present in society. They have been slipped into our lives and our stores. People wouldn’t usually think twice about buying a product aimed towards their gender. These products have been introduced in into razors, facial products, and health products.
These products are problem. They are not only over priced but extremely sexist. They prey on the ideas society has been fed for years. Businesses take these ideas and use them to their advantage and consumers buy and cherish them.
Prom: Is It Worth It?
By Lily Foster
Is prom really worth it? The majority of teens would say “yes”, but according to the credit card company Visa, $1,139 will be spent on average, per family. Prom is expensive for all genders. Boys have to buy/rent a tux, get flowers, and potentially buy dinner. While boys spend a lot of money, the average teenage girl spends money on a dress, their hair and nails, shoes and jewelry, flowers, and potentially dinner.
The first reason why spending too much money on prom isn’t worth it is that lower income families are paying WAY more than families with a higher income. For example, families who earn under $25,000 will spend a total of $1,1393 on prom while families who earn more than $50,000 will spend a total of $799.
Another reason why prom isn’t worth all of the money is that many of the parents are paying for up to 75% of prom expenses. Last year, parents payed 56% of the bill while this year it is expected that parents will cover 73% of the costs. Imagine how all of the people who worked really, really hard on earning enough money to go to the event feel when some of their closest friends paid close to none.
Yes, there is the argument that in this day and age, prom is a right of passage for teens and it’s a fun night to hang with your friends, but you can always throw your own parties. No one has to dress up and you can have just as much fun.
The last reason why spending loads of money for prom isn’t worth it is that many teens are spending more on the promposal than the actual dance itself. For example, a student promposed to his girlfriend with a trip to Hawaii! Teens are putting so much effort, time, and piles of money into the perfect ask. What if the person you’re asking says no? What a waste of money!
A possible solution to this problem is parents encouraging their kids to work more towards the cost. Also, it makes the teen appreciate it way more, knowing that they earned it.

Glacial Drumlin School’s start time for 7th grade is 7:45 And ends at 3:05, is this schedule fair to the students and teachers? First, when students get up very early they may not be awake enough to be able to function; In highschool it may not be safe for students to drive to school after just waking up. Yes, students could go to sleep earlier but sometimes that isn't an option. 5th graders at Glacial Drumlin get out of school earlier than all other grades in the school, even when the other grades often get the same or more homework than the 5th graders. We all need time to finish our homework and eat dinner with some free time afterwards. Along with that we also need to get a reasonable amount of sleep. With Sports and extracurricular activities that most students participate in, all kids should get more time to complete homework, eat, and relax after school before going to bed. If not students might be having to stay up late trying to finish homework, or getting late work. If students don’t have enough time to finish homework their grades will suffer. In all, schools should adjust their start and end times to fit the student body’s needs.
We need bigger lockers
By: Meghan Kohl
Students have always had the complaint of having a small locker. Too much stuff, not enough space, can’t find anything, and so on. So here are some reasons why we need bigger lockers.
Some students have too much stuff in their lockers from the amount of stuff they need in their classes. The money used from fundraisers usually goes to teacher’s payments but it should go to getting bigger lockers.
In winter some kids have big coats, boots, shoes to change into, hats, gloves, the works. The cause of that is less room to put their big binders, backpacks, and pencil bags. If we have more room to put more shelves we could do this with ease.
Some people say it’s the student’s fault they aren’t organized enough. But the problem with that is they have too much stuff to be organized.
Some students don’t put some papers or folders away so when they open their locker, papers, pencils, lunch boxes, and folders come out all over the floor. If we have a separate area for this stuff then it will be organized.
In conclusion, we should get bigger lockers so we have more room to put our binders, winter gear, and extra papers and pencils.

Longer Passing Times
By: Brock Drake
Did you know that most students only have three minutes on break to get a drink, use the restroom, and get all their supplies for class? Schools should get longer passing times in between classes. We should have longer than three minutes breaks. The first reason we should have longer passing times in between classes is because people forget things. Because we have to go back to get their supplies, we run out of time and then we will be late. Teachers then mark us tardy. Another reason we should have longer passing times is that kids need to use the restroom and some teachers don’t let us do this during class. If we try to go during passing time the stalls are usually too full. Some people may feel that having longer passing times would cut into class time. However class time may be a few minutes shorter, but it will be uninterrupted time. The last and final reason we should have longer passing time is that it might be difficult to get to classes on time, especially if the classes are on the other side of the building. Kids definitely need more than three minutes. All in all kids in schools should have more passing times in between classes throughout the day. They need it!

Why Trump should not be president
By: Hayden VanLanen
Donald Trump should not be president and here are some reasons why. First of all, he is very misogynistic. He says the absolutely worst things about women. He will try to look like he values women, but then says things that are rude and immature. He said “beauty and elegance, whether in a women, a building, or a work of art, is not just something superficial or pretty to see.” Next, he calls people out on the the stupidest things and it is usually about other candidates or just people in general. He said “ Look at that face. Who would vote for that! Can you imagine that the face of our new president?” He said that to Carly Fiorina. How do you think she felt about that? Some people say he’s been a successful businessman and will know how to run the country. Just because he ran a business doesn’t mean he will know how to run our country. He also made his own vodka. The slogan was “Success Distilled.” Why did he become successful enough to have his own drink. It makes it even worse that he has the word “success” in the slogan. Another reason, he cares more about his campaign than the people voting for it. All he wants to do is become president so he can be as racist and unfair as he wants to be and do it to whoever he wants. All he wants to be is the most powerful man in the country. You can see why Donald Trump should not be president. He is misogynistic, he says mean things about people. And he cares more about his campaign than the people voting for it.

Is It Real?
By Matthew Koenig
Everybody knows what reality TV is. Teen Mom, Survivor, The Bachelor, The Voice, Jersey Shore, shows like those. The kind of shows that you watch when no one is around because you love them so much. But what if these shows were dangerous instead of funny? I feel that reality TV shows do more harm than good. And here are some reasons why.
One big way that reality shows damage our society is the way they portray human relationships. Television producers know that show ratings go up when siblings fight or parents have issues. When people on TV have very unhealthy relationships with each other, it shows people that it is fine to be abusive or to fight all the time. The people act in ways that are rude and and mean. As former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey put it, “Reality TV is set up to make people entertaining. A good person with values and principles is not good television.” She meant that people with great morals and character traits tend to be less dramatic, and that causes show ratings to drop.
Another way that reality shows impact our society negatively is through the use of stereotypes. Many reality shows play off of stereotypes like the “dumb jock”, the “ugly nerd”, and the “teacher's pets”. But some go even farther beyond that and play into the stereotypes placed on certain ethnicities and the LGBTQ community. These shows reinforce incorrect and harmful ideas about people. An example of this is the comedy show South Park. One episode called Ginger Kids talked about redheads in a very negative way. It said that they had no souls and were basically the root of all evil. This led to “Kick A Ginger Day”, which was a sort of prank in which you kick any redheads you saw. Needless to say, many people got victimized because of this.
Now some people might say that reality TV is “real” and focuses on the average American. But does it really? Let’s talk about that.
Most of the reality shows you see are scripted, which means that the cast is told what to do and does it. Another way they aren’t “real” is the fact that when people have cameras watching their every move, they act differently from when there are no cameras. And most of the cast members on a show are not your “average Americans”. Most are small-time actors, writers, producers, and models. And some of them aren’t even American! Cast members also wear tons of makeup, and when we compare ourselves to people who we think always look that way, people’s self esteem can plummet.
While I’m pretty sure nobody is going to call off The Bachelor soon, getting rid of shows that are unrealistic could help a lot. Getting cast members who also come from a more relatable life will also make people realize that these are just regular people like you and me. So the next time you watch a reality show, think about what is going on.
Election Day
By: Benson Wood
I’d like you to think about something. Let’s say that you are over 18, and Election Day has come around. You are a decided voter, and you’re ready to place your vote. But what if you were busy that day, or work took too long? What if you weren’t able to vote on the day possible?
This is a problem that needs to be solved. I am going to propose three different ways we can improve Election Day fit in as many voters as possible, which would make the vote more fair.
My first idea for improving our voting numbers is from an experiment/news article created in 2014 that I read. The majority of people who did not vote (35%) did not because of schedule conflicts between work or school. It would be a good idea to make it a law to give people days off of school or work so they can vote.
My second idea would be to extend Election Day to three days. This would give people an extended amount of time to give people chances to decide who they want to vote for. It would also be another solution to the last problem, where people could not get off of work or school. It would undoubtedly help the undecided citizens and the registered voters too.
My third and final idea is to distribute other types of voting, before election day. Make public announcements about these other types of voting before election. Make everyone have a form to fill out if they can't make election day, and to specifically give people a deadline to fill it out before Election Day just in case they are absent.
To specify and conclude this editorial, I believe we should either create a law that would allow people to get out of their work/school to vote, adding 2 more days to election day, or distribute the idea of early voting.

Should Schools Allow Children to Have Their Phones in Class?
By: Trinity McNall
Students should and shouldn’t be able to use their phones in school and during class. Here are a few reasons why students should have their phones in class. First, schools should allow phones because it would help with getting to things quicker, like emails online sites without the hassle of getting logged on the chromebook, plugging them back in, and putting them in the correct spot. As well as, breaking something in school (chromebook, ipad, etc.) that teacher had to pay for with their own money. Bill De Blasio said in Scholastic News that, “Make the switch mainly for safety reasons.” Another reason is, safety of the child. If the student needs to get a hold of their parents and they don’t have their phone and they need it right then and there they will have their phone with them. The final reason for allowing schools’ students to have their phones in class is, useful tools. On your phone there are many useful tools you can use and get to easily and quickly. Here are a few reasons why students shouldn’t use phones in class. First, students could use their phones to play games on or use social media, (snapchat, instagram, etc.) Second of all, students could get distracted by their phones during class and not pay attention at all. Finally, students could get notifications that could interrupt the class and what the teacher is teaching. As you can tell, there are a few reasons why students should and shouldn’t use their phones in class.

Should Schools use Computers?
By: Zachary Blotz
Schools these days have been upgrading their technology and adding things like computers and chromebooks. I think computers shouldn’t be used in schools.
Reason 1 is that when teachers make their kids use the computers for homework, they could go late into the night doing it, because it may be due the next day. The NSF(national sleep foundation) says that you should turn off electronics 2 hours before bed, or you could have a lower attention span and get less sleep, among other things.
Using computers can change a child’s brain. Psychology Today says that it can lead to distraction and decreased memory.
People might say that it is more efficient, but here’s the catch. It’s easier to hand out a paper than to set up a computer.
Schools shouldn’t use computers because it can give some people headaches and migraines. According to Webmd, too much screen time causes headaches and migraines.
Although I think computer classes should stay to prepare us for later life, all the other computers are unneeded, so the school can make some money for other more important things.
Trump is no president!
By: Grace Christianson
Donald Trump should not be president because, he is stuck-up, he is racist, he is also a bully. I will tell you why. One good reason why Trump shouldn’t be president is that he is stuck-up. He once said, “My father gave me a small loan of 1 million dollars…” A SMALL loan?! Excuse me but, one million dollars is not a small loan. He obviously uses suing people as a good threat to keep his name clear. It just dirties it up more.
Another good reason why Trump is no president is that, he’s racist. He says that Mexicans are killers, drug dealers, and criminals. Trump also said that they were rapists. Some might say, ‘Well, statistically that is true. Mexicans are rapists.’ However, the fact is that not all Mexicans are rapists.
Reason three, Trump is also a bully. He meanly imitated an cripple right in front of the man and has also insulted Obama by saying that Obama was the worst president in U.S history. That is not true.
In conclusion, Trump is racist, he is a bully, is stuck-up, and would just make an overall bad president.
Is Too Much Healthy Food Bad For You?
By: Adeline Dean
When someone says food is good for you but in reality too much of any food is not healthy. I know what you're thinking, too much healthy food is bad for you. Yes, it is because it has to do with the many bad chemicals in the food. Not all healthy food is bad for you, there are many different types of food that are bad and good, People should eat good food.
It's ok to eat food that has something bad in it, because if you be super causes and check for bad stuff and choose to not eat the food it could cut down your eating abilities. Saying one healthy food is good for, but too much of any food is bad for your your body. Studies show that even one meal can mess with your health. Meaning that a healthy food like steak, it could affect you health. A man named Dr. Mercolia says that when you grill a piece of steak the grease is what makes it unhealthy.
Studies show an unhealthy eating disorder known as orthorexia, it concerns people's diets extremly, which can cause or lead to nutritional deficiencies and create mental distress to being a perfect healthy eater. Having a favorite food is ok, but eating that food everyday (even if it’s healthy) is bad for you because everything has at least something bad in it. An example is people having water is amazing good for you, you should at least have 8 cups of water a day. Having too much water is unhealthy for you. Studies having more than 10 cups of water a day is really bad because it can overload your stomach and get you sick.
Adding to the topic before, some foods seem really healthy but it can always have something bad. Strawberries for example, people think are really healthy and good for you, which they are, but in reality having one too many is really bad for you. Studies show that strawberries have high in calcium. It can lead to high calcium blood. That can lead to cancer. Having 10% to 20% of calcium is dangerous, saying it doesn’t sound like a lot but it is and having that much can cause getting a tumor to a disease known as hyperparathyroidism.
Eating too much healthy is bad because some healthy foods have dangerous food chemicals that can cause various diseases. A well ingredient that many people don’t know as commonly well as others is Enriched Flour. Enriched Flour is bad because it is bleached and the bleach is what makes it bad for your body and can cause sickness or even death.
Having to say it’s hard not to eat a lot of food, we all enjoy food, many people love eating. 17.9% of the world's population don’t eat due to insecurity of their body or illnesses they have. Watching out for healthy dangerous food products is even healthier and better than just eating healthy on a regular basis. This is why eating so much is bad even if it’s the healthier food.
Students need bigger lockers!
By:Cally Schmidt
I think we should have bigger lockers because sometimes smaller lockers cause troubles. 86% people say yes to bigger lockers. Students need more room to put their books, assignments, backpacks, and lunches. Some students can't even fit their winter jackets into their lockers which when its cold out the teachers require you to wear your winter jackets. If students had bigger lockers then we might arrive to class earlier because we can find our school supplies easier and faster. Students will also be more organized.
If we have smaller lockers there is a smaller chance of theft. Phones, laptops, and ipods are all expensive so there is a higher chance of them getting stolen. Schools could just make sure lockers are more secure for students so their is a smaller chance of theft. Students use up to much locker space. 65 out of 78 7th graders at Hammond School sa we don't have enough locker space. Some students have to push their way through people to get to their lockers while other students are late to class due to not being able to get to their lockers. As you can see that is why students should have bigger lockers. If students don't have bigger lockers problems may be caused.
Crucial Combustions?

The usage of the atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 is still debated about today. The bombs were a key part to the Japanese surrender in World War II. I believe the use of the atomic bombs was justified.
The United States gave Japan many chances to surrender the war. Historians estimate that America dropped around ten million leaflets to warn Japan of what would happen should the Japanese not surrender. However, the Japanese government did not listen to these warnings and continued to fight.
Also, the bombs were necessary to end the war. Even after the Hiroshima bomb, which killed 140,000 people, the Japanese military wasn’t ready to surrender. The Nagasaki bomb was the only way to get the war to come to an ending.
Some people may argue that the bombs killed many innocent civilians. Without the dropping of the bombs, the war could have extended weeks or months, and there would be a considerable amount of deaths.
Finally, when the Japanese surrendered, the Koreans were free from the Japanese rule. Japan made living conditions for all Koreans unbearable during the time of WWII. When the Koreans were finally free, not only did the United States defeat their enemy, but they also helped out their ally, Korea.
With all of this in mind, it’s clear to see that the usage of the atomic bombs were a necessary part to ending World War II.
Problems With the Wage Gap
By Aurora Hines
Should women in the same positions as men get payed markedly less? The females of the world would clearly state,”No.” Many companies around the world take part in the wage-gap illegally. If we want our world to be educated, we should have equal rights and pay for anyone despite their gender.
All women of all ethnicities should be open to the same opportunities as men. It seems like if you are not a man it’s harder to get a high-paying steady job. Most women have the exact same job as men but they receive a fraction of what men are paid. According to the American Community Survey, women earn 78 cents compared to a man’s dollar. Women in today’s world also need to make a living.
Another reason there should be equal pay is to help the families of America. Today, women are doing jobs that were typically run by men. If women are in these jobs, they are not always paid fairly. When this happens, women sometimes don’t have the money to feed their family. If we want our future generations to live healthfully, we need everyone to get the same amount of money.
Some people claim that it is not a big deal that men get paid a few cents more than women. According to aauw.org, men earn $50,383 yearly while women earn $39,621 yearly. When the money adds up, the money gap is huge.
The most obvious reason there should be equal pay is because it’s against the law to pay people less due to gender. Still, companies find a way to hire people by gender. If you know of a company that does this, contact an official.
If women and men get equal pay, everybody will get the same opportunity, affect families positively, and it won’t go against the law. Some things you could do is discuss this problem with your business, check that you have accurate records, and obtain legal assistance if necessary. Men and women must get paid equally so families can stay steady, have same opportunities, and ensure the law.
Why You Shouldn’t Vote For Donald Trump
By: Jake Schaefer
As many of you may know, Donald J. Trump is running for President of the United States. 7 of 10 Americans say that Donald Trump is not eligible to run for or ever be President. Here are some reasons why you shouldn’t vote for Donald Trump.
First, he has openly said he’ll force our troops to break the law. When you have a man saying to the public that he’s going to force our military to obey his illegal orders to murder civilian women and children, it should disqualify him for the office of president. Do you really trust someone in the White House who has that kind of mentality?
Second, he can't be trusted with nuclear weapons. Trump is very casual in his attitude about using nuclear weapons. A big thing is that he refused to rule out using tactical nuclear weapons against ISIS. He also said he is fine with Japan and South Korea going nuclear. His own supporter, Karma Pierson said, “What good does it do to have a good nuclear trade if you’re afraid to use it?”
Many people might say that Trump is a good businessman but he has failed in many of his investments. Some examples are, Trump Steaks, GoTrump.com, Trump Airlines, Trump: The Game, Trump Magazine, Trump Ice, etc. One thing that all of these investments have in them is they all have Trump in the title.
My last reason is he encourages violence. Among many others, Liz Mair, Erick Erickson, Sierra Marlee, Michelle Fields, Dana Loesch and Bethany Mandel, among with numerous convention delegates, have received serious threats from Trump. Do you really want someone like this to be our President?
As you can see, Donald Trump is not mature, nice and smart enough to be the President of the United States. He should go back to preschool. Having Trump as the face of America is unthinkable.

Pumped 4 Water
By: Camille Simmons and Anabelle Vesperman
Have you ever been forced to walk over five hours every day to reach contaminated water, that will most likely lead to sickness? Children in Uganda, as young as 10 years old, are forced to do this about two times a day. To help the African lifestyle improve, Monona Grove High School (MGHS) has been involved in a clean water program known as Pumped 4 Water. This year, 7th graders at Glacial Drumlin Middle School (GDS) have been able to participate in this amazing program through raising money, giving donations, and even being involved in the simulated Walk For Water journey. Pumped 4 Water is giving children the right to an education, and health. Who wouldn’t want to preserve the world’s children?
The program includes a simulation where kids walked as many times around GDS as possible, carrying as much water as they could. Most of the students chose to carry a filled gallon of water. In Uganda and other areas of Africa, however, women carry anywhere between 20-40 lbs, for miles on end.
Kiera Ellefson, a local GDS 7th grader, gave the highest donation of $148.00. “Why I donated was simple,” Ellefson stated, “I was so shocked to hear how far and long women had to walk to get water. I wanted to help, and wasn’t sure how much others would bring in. I got into the swing of things.” Kiera’s donation will help many become healthy and educated. Kids and women in Uganda cannot get a standard education due to most of their day spent getting muddy water from holes in the ground. In total, GDS 7th graders raised $1,932.77. Overall, 1,297 people will benefit from this well, including children going to St. Martin’s Secondary School, which has a class of about 767, as well as two neighboring villages also without access to clean water.
Jenny Harvey, a Senior at MGHS revealed, “That the best outcome of this program will be making kids’ lives better.” These students have worked so hard to benefit lives of young Africans, and it’s only fair that we contribute to make these sick, uneducated children well again, as these wonderful people already have.
Healthy Meal?
By: Maura Phillips
Should children all across the world, suffer from unhealthy and non nutritional meals? Not only do these lunches affect students’ health, they also affect the environment and the economy.
All of the fatty and processes aspects in school lunches hurts kids’ health and physical performances. When serving 300 to maybe even 1,00 students a day, the schools aren’t going to want to get fresh organic food. So, you get good old frozen, packaged food. One example of a popular school lunch is french fries, a burger, cookie, milk/juice, and maybe some fruits or veggies on the side.
Recently, global warming and pollution have been a big environmental issue. Mostly all food in school lunches is processed and/or made in factories, creating more environmental problems. Although not every school has unhealthy food, there are far too many making the shy grey. “We are living on the planet as if we have another one to go to.” -Terry Swearingen
Even though their parents might not agree, many kids love junk food. They don’t really care what goes in their body, just as long as it’s yummy. But, when you think about it, the parents could be paying more for medical help due to all of the unhealthy food in the long run.
Bills, upon bills, upon bills. Many families across the world are challenged with financial struggles. Some believe that getting school lunch will be cheaper than making their own. Think about it like this: there are about 190 days in a school year, and school lunch costs about three dollars. That is $570 dollars a school year if you get school lunch every day. School lunch isn’t looking so cheap now.
As you can see, school lunches have many negative affects. From health, to our environment, and finally money. One solution to this problem is to make the time to pack your own lunch at home, to ensure healthier ingredients.
Schools Having More Options For Languages
By: Brianna Back
Schools should have more options for students learning new languages. Most schools only learn one or two languages. The schools who only learn one or two languages usually only have Spanish or French to pick from in middle school.
Students want to learn different languages other than Spanish and French. Some students want to learn German, Italian, or even Chinese. In 2008 there had been studies shown, that Spanish is the most commonly used language program in the United States. Next to Spanish is French that is the second most common used program in the United States middle schools.
Students in school might want to grow up and be a language teacher. Some would want to learn German or other languages to teach at a school and would want to learn earlier in middle school. Some studies showed that about 25% of students want to be a language teacher when they grow up.
In a recent article that I had read it said,” there should not be more languages to teach in school because students would not use the extra languages later in life”. I would respond to that by saying there should be more languages that they teach in school because it could increase their educational skills and help them later in life if they come upon someone that speaks a different language and the student could help them.
Some students want to learn sign language so that they can teach other people or they know someone who is deaf so they can speak with them. Students who are deaf could go to a school and want to interact with other students and don’t know how to do sign language yet until they learn it.
Students should be able to pick at least 2 other languages other than Spanish and French. Students who want to be a teacher when they grow up or are deaf could learn earlier when they are young and could use those skills later in life.

Backpacking Across the School
By: Kylie Hollenstein
If you ask somebody what they think of school, one of the most common responses is “Backpacks”. Why are more and more disappearing from the curriculum? While backpacks are allowed to and from school, they can be just as useful, if not more during the school day. Debate.org actually hosted a discussion on this subject, and more than 90% of users agreed that backpacks should be used in class.
First off, less time will be wasted at lockers. When everything for your classes is being transported with you, then little to no time will be spent at lockers. “If we were able to have backpacks, we would get more learning time because we don’t have to waste time gathering our materials” distressed student, Natalie Condon pointed out. Which is an excellent point, the passing times are long but if you’re just switching cores, then it isn’t near enough time to go to your locker. Attempting to do so will make you late to class which will give you a tardy. Tardies are like permanent record ghosts that just chill and make bring future colleges or employers think you’re irresponsible because you’re not punctual. If less people got to college/get a job the economy tanks. Save the economy. Allow backpacks.
My next point is, kids are more likely to bring all of their materials to class. How often do kids have to leave the classroom to retrieve materials that are in their lockers? When they leave the class, students could miss vital information for tests or projects. If backpacks were allowed, class wouldn’t be interrupted to go and get a single item.
You might be thinking, “If backpacks are allowed in class then kids will sneak in weapons.” People will find a way to sneak in something dangerous if they really want to. This surprisingly, isn’t why the school has banned backpacks from class. The official reason is,”When they are used throughout the school day, they often accumulate so much material that their bulk contributes to traffic jams in the hallway or on stairs.” I don’t believe this to be true. Hallways are terrible in the mornings not necessarily due to the backpacks but because so many people are going in a direction at once. During the day, kids are going several different directions for their next class, and if they had backpacks it wouldn’t be necessary to stop at lockers. Not stopping at lockers will minimize hallway traffic.
Backpacks being allowed in school will maximize class time, help the economy, and reduce hallway traffic. All of those little things add up over time to create a better school, which of course will help the community. Help the community and allow backpacks.

Books Should Be On Paper
By: Camille Simmons
Books have been a controversial topic for years. Not only the content, but everything from the size to the type of spine, it seems like no one can agree on the proper type of book. A current controversy is whether or not books should be printed as well as being available online. The obvious answer to this predicament is that while books can be digital, printed books are necessary and there should always be at least two copies on paper.
In this day and age, people already spend an average of nine hours a day staring at a screen. This is already an appalling fact, but the aftermath is even worse. 90% of Americans who use the internet daily have developed a condition known as Computer Vision Syndrome, or CVS for short. Some of the major effects of CVS are dry eyes, blurred vision, eye strain, headaches, and backpain. In fact, some people have even gone blind from staring at a screen for too long, which defeats the purpose of reading in the first place. If books are only available online, these statistics may get worse.
As humans, one of our main concerns is remembering where we come from. This is proven daily by everything from how we eat, dress, and even talk. While the internet is definitely part of our history, it has only been around for a few decades. Paper has been around since before Christ. This means that while the internet seems like it affects is more. Without the creation of paper we would have had to rely on oral storytelling, which changed every time.
Paper copies can be a pain to get your hands on, especially when compared to how easy it is to open your phone or laptop and download a book. Encouraging your local community to build a library or bookstore is one option, but often times the local schools have libraries that are also very easily accessible.
The internet will never be able to be held in our hands. It is more likely to crash and break, thus taking all the literature with it. If this were to occur and books were only digitial, thousands of authors would lose their hard work, and even more people would lose a huge part of their life. This is a very threatening matter, and the world would likely fall into chaos if this were to ever happen. The internet is fragile, and as creatures who enjoy certainty, it only makes sense to have a backup plan.
The internet is an amazing invention which needs to be used and explored. However nothing is foolproof. That is why we having at least two paper copies of a book at all times is a necessity.

Girl Power!
By: Anabelle Vesperman
Have you ever been diagnosed with an illness that could not be cured, just because there is little money available for research? Believe it or not, some girls have. Rett Syndrome (RTS) is a neurological disorder affecting mainly girls. This disease can have major side effects, particularly loss of normal movement where one is unable to walk or speak. Overall, the general public is unaware of this disease and its seriousness, so I encourage you to give money to educate, cure, and rehabilitate these unfairly disregarded girls.
To this day and age, there is no cure for RTS. This is partially due to it being uncommon and rare. Among Americans, about one in every 10,000 to 15,000 girls are affected. In addition, it is difficult to find a cure due to it being caused by a spontaneous genetic mutation. This means it is entirely random, completely unfair to those diagnosed. This therefore makes it onerous to treat. However, with more tools and money, research can be conducted further, to find a healing point. Giving a donation will help find a cure for this demobilizing disorder.
Moreover, donating has the possibility to change a single life, if not many. Due to RTS, those diagnosed are not able to participate in everyday activities that most girls can. Even rehabilitation can help with tremors, involuntary quivering or shaking, muscle stiffness, and scoliosis. If rehabilitation works, or a cure is invented, then these girls will be able to continue their education through college, and even through sports and athletics. Donating to this cause has the ability to further educate America’s girls and young women.
Although this disorder is uncommon, with a cure, there will be no stopping women and girls. With treatment opportunities, women will be able to receive higher roles in society, such as going into the political or medical field, mainly male dominated career paths. This will actually help those everywhere because the medical field is losing doctors and nurses in Pediatrics due to a smaller annual profit. Donating money for a cure will give America more doctors to help the United States become happier and healthier. If you make these girls well again, they may one day be helping your children and family members.
Furthermore, the life expectancy of those with RTS is significantly shorter than those without. It is unlikely these girls will live beyond the age of 40. Finding a cure will literally increase the lives of women. Why would you not want to make girls live longer? Donating will save them from death. Please donate if you care about this horrifying matter.
In conclusion, donating towards this disorder will help empower women and girls. Finding a cure will relieve these wonderful people of the burden on their shoulders. These girls don’t want your pity, they want your support. Donating to these strong young women will show you care. Give money for research, rehabilitation, and treatment at rettsyndrome.org.
